Your Guide to a Successful Tummy Tuck Recovery

A tummy tuck procedure is an excellent way to smooth and enhance the contours of your abdomen. Knowing what to expect following your treatment at Park Cities Plastic Surgery is often essential to a successful tummy tuck recovery.

At our Dallas, TX, practice, Dr. David Liland is devoted to patients recovery and makes himself available for all follow-up care and questions. After your procedure, he will also provide you with guidelines that detail how you can maximize healing.

The First 24 Hours

The day of your surgery, you will need a designated driver to escort you to and from our facility. After the procedure, we will wrap the surgical site and stitches with bandages and, if necessary, place drains. We will monitor your recovery for several hours at the surgical facility to ensure your safety before approving you to return home. When you leave, you will receive a list of post-surgical instructions, which will often include recommendations such as:

  • Taking prescribed medications to minimize inflammation and the risk of infection
  • Taking over-the-counter pain relief
  • Monitoring and changing your surgical drains and bandages

These instructions will often include information regarding when you should return for your first follow-up visit, as well.

While patients should avoid strenuous activities, light walking around the house can go a long way toward preventing complications.

The Following Weeks

For the first 48 to 72 hours, we recommend having a trusted friend or family member assist you around the house. Once the anesthesia wears off, light walking is encouraged because it can reduce the risk of complications like blood clots. However, patients should avoid bending over or lifting anything heavy.

You should also stay hydrated and follow any dietary guidelines given to you by Dr. Liland. Patients who use tobacco should stop smoking altogether for several weeks, as nicotine significantly hinders the body’s natural healing processes.

Preparation is the key to a safe recovery.

During your recovery, keep a close eye on your incisions. If you notice any redness, swelling, or other signs of infection, contact our office right away. Keeping your activity level to a minimum can help you avoid any complications.

When Can I Return to Normal Activities?

While exact timelines vary from patient to patient, those with sedentary desk jobs can often return to the office in about one week where patients with more physically demanding jobs should wait at least two to three weeks. You will be able to drive again after two weeks of healing and can resume any exercise routines after a month.

Tips and Tricks for Enjoying a Successful Recovery

Preparation is the key to a safe recovery. Before you come in for your tummy tuck, take time to sit down and review all pre-and post-op instructions. Make sure you gather everything you need prior to your surgery day. For example:

  • Go by the pharmacy to pick up your prescriptions a few days early
  • Stock your pantry with healthy foods
  • Gather books, tablets, music, and other forms of entertainment and keep them by your bedside
  • Do all your housework and laundry ahead of time

Think ahead and anticipate your needs. These simple things can make all the difference for a successful tummy tuck recovery.
