What Is A Mommy Makeover?
Mommy makeover procedures refer to a combination of body contouring surgeries performed on women whose figures have changed after pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. The hormonal and weight changes that accompany pregnancy can lead to long-term alterations in a woman’s figure, particularly to the abdomen and breasts. These changes can result in a huge loss of confidence, so many women desire to gain their post-pregnancy body back.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery, in 2020 in the US breast augmentation surgery, Liposuction, and tummy tuck surgery were all in the top five most commonly performed procedures. Mommy makeover procedures involve at least one, if not all three of these procedures, and have a 96% worth it rating on RealSelf.

What Procedures Are Typically Involved In A Mommy Makeover?
Mommy makeovers tend to combine multiple procedures typically on the breasts, abdomen, and liposuction of the thighs, hips, love handles, or back.
The breasts are a fundamental area addressed during a mommy makeover. The chosen breast procedure our Dallas mommy makeover patients choose to undergo depends on their personal goals and how pregnancy impacted their figure. The potential breast procedures include:
Breast Implant Surgery – either silicone or saline breast implants can be inserted to increase breast size after pregnancy.
Breast Lift– reshapes, lifts, and tightens the breast to address worries of excess skin and sagging.
Breast Reduction– removes fat and tissue to decrease breast size for patients whose breasts grew significantly due to pregnancy.
Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation– transfers fat from the body into the breasts for women who lost breast volume due to pregnancy or breastfeeding and desire a natural-looking enhancement.
During pregnancy, the abdomen expands which frequently creates excess skin and stretches the abdominal muscles. These muscles can be tightened and any excess skin can be removed to produce a flatter abdomen. Liposuction of the abdomen can take place alongside a tummy tuck so that unwanted fat deposits can also be removed.
A full tummy tuck can be performed where the entire abdomen is treated or a mini tummy tuck can be undertaken to address the area of the abdomen below the belly button. Although suitable candidates for a mommy makeover should be close to their ideal weight, the procedure often includes removing unwanted and excess fat deposits from areas of concern to the patient.
Liposuction can be performed on various areas of the body but is most commonly performed on the hips, love handles, or thighs. Preparing For A Mommy Makeover
Before the Consultation
You should undertake research on the procedure and it is advisable to bring photos of your ideal figure to the consultation so that Dr. Liland can be clear on your aims. Any questions or concerns will be addressed during the consultation and you will receive more information on the different procedures, risks, and recovery.
Many patients know what procedures they desire, while others are unsure what would be most suitable for their needs and goals. This is why Dr. Liland will perform an assessment of a patient’s body to evaluate the best procedures to achieve each woman’s specific goals. He will discuss your medical history, current medications and will take any necessary photos.
Before the Procedure
At least a month before the procedure it is important that our Dallas mommy makeover patients stop smoking six weeks before the procedure and stop taking any medications that Dr. Liland recommends.
How Is A Mommy Makeover Performed?
General Anesthesia will be administered by a Board Certified Anesthesiologist. In some cases, local anesthetic and sedation can be used, but this depends on the exact procedures being performed.
An incision is made to the targeted area. The type and size of the incision will depend on the procedure. For liposuction, a small incision is made where the cannula will be inserted. For a tummy tuck or breast surgery, a larger incision line is made which will leave a scar.
Through the incision hole the specific procedure will then be performed. This could involve inserting a cannula to vacuum out fat deposits, inserting breast implants, or removing excess skin from the breasts or stomach.
Closing the Incisions
The incisions will be closed, most likely with dissolvable stitches, and will be dressed in the necessary way for recovery. If permanent stitches are used for the closing of any incisions they will need to be removed around a week after the procedure.
Steps 2-4 will then be repeated for the next procedures as only one procedure will be performed at a time. The order in which your procedures will be conducted will vary depending on what you are having done. Generally, any procedures of the back, such as back or love handle liposuction, will be conducted first and then the breast procedures tend to be performed before anything on the abdomen.

Recovery From A Mommy Makeover
You must arrange for an adult to drive you home and stay with you for the first day after your procedure. The specific recovery instructions will depend on the procedures which were performed and Dr. Liland will explain all the recovery information before your surgery. It is important to follow all recovery and aftercare instructions such as wearing any necessary compression garments, cleaning incisions properly, avoiding strenuous exercise, eating well, drinking plenty of fluids, and avoiding smoking for a further 6 weeks.
It is recommended that you take around 2-4 weeks recovery time. In most cases, it takes up to 3 months before our Dallas mommy makeover patients have fully recovered from the procedure and up to 6 months until all the swelling has subsided.
The risks of the procedure depend on which surgeries are undergone. For specific risks, you can view the web pages on Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation, Breast implants, Breast Lift, Breast Reduction, Liposuction, or Tummy Tuck.
