Children are a blessing, but pregnancy and breastfeeding can cause women to feel unhappy with their appearance as they can leave the breasts appearing deflated or droopy. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons considers breast implants a safe and effective method for restoring lost volume. However, breast augmentation does not address stretched-out breast tissue. It is usually combined with a breast lift during mommy makeover surgery to resolve this issue.
Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, Or Both?
The best way to see if you need a breast lift with your mommy makeover to restore your breast contour is to look in the mirror and see if your nipples still face forward. If not, a breast lift will address your concerns better than implants alone. You can improve your breast shape with a breast lift or combine it with implants for enhanced size.
As much as some people would like to believe a larger implant will compensate for all the droopiness and lift the breasts on its own, it leads to complications in the long run. If your breasts are sagging, it’s because your breast tissue has become weaker and loosened up, and it is certainly not strong enough to hold up a heavy implant.
When patients have both volume loss and loose, sagging skin in their breasts, our recommendation for the best breast surgery to include in their mommy makeover is typically a breast lift with implants. A breast lift can restore perkiness and contour while repositioning the nipples back to the center of the breasts.
If pregnancy and breastfeeding leave you with not only sagging breasts but also volume loss, breast augmentation can enhance your breast volume to the plump appearance it was pre-baby (or even better). In the right hands, breast augmentation can look natural and complement your natural frame perfectly.
Why Include Breast Augmentation In Mommy Makeover?
Usually, when women seek mommy makeovers, they aim to tighten loose skin and remove lingering, stubborn, exercise-resistant fat in areas they want to look slimmer, especially around the midsection, to highlight their curves. For example, augmenting the breasts with a tummy tuck and liposuction helps create a beautiful “hourglass” shape.
If you want to address both your midsection and your breasts after having children or gravity causes changes in your body, the most logical way to do so is by combining them into one surgery during a mommy makeover. Combining breast augmentation with a tummy tuck, for example, allows you to tighten your midsection and restore volume in your breasts in one procedure, only going under anesthesia once, and involves only one recovery period.
Having a single surgery to address your tummy and breasts allows you to spend less time away from work and the gym, as you will only have to recover from one surgery, not both individually. It’s also better for your body to experience the trauma of surgery once rather than at separate times. Having multiple surgeries can damage and weaken your tissues.
The most notable reason to include breast implants in your mommy makeover is that you’ll see more dramatic results more quickly than if you had a separate procedure for breast augmentation. If you had a separate tummy tuck and a breast augmentation, you’d have to wait for your tummy tuck results to heal properly before undergoing your breast augmentation. Then, go through several weeks of recovery before seeing your final results with your implants.
Breast augmentation can address most of the concerns women commonly have after having children and breastfeeding. Some of the most notable benefits of opting to include breast augmentation in your mommy makeover surgery include:
- Balances breast and hip contours, creating a more defined “hourglass” frame
- Adds fullness to your breasts
- Increases projection of your breasts
- Adding volume to your breasts highlights your slimmer, tighter waist when paired with a tummy tuck or liposuction
- Restores self-confidence
Best Type Of Breast Implants For Mommy Makeover
Once you decide to include breast implants in your mommy makeover, other decisions need to be made, such as implant type, size, and placement.
If you plan to get a breast lift with implants during your mommy makeover, saline implants are the best choice to keep scarring at a minimum by inserting the implant via a tiny incision before filling. Saline implants, however, are more likely to rupture than some implant types, and most women believe they don’t feel as natural as other options.
If you are concerned about ruptures, gummy bear implants are the best option; even if the outer shell breaks, the gel remains in place. Gummy bear implants are a preference by many patients as they maintain their shape over time.
For breast augmentation in general, silicone is the top choice among patients as it feels and looks the most natural. Silicone implants maintain their place and shape over time. The gel inside the implants, however, can spread if ruptured. If they rupture, these can safely be removed and replaced by a board-certified plastic surgeon experienced in breast implant exchange.
When it comes to restoring the size of your breasts to their pre-baby fullness after pregnancy and breastfeeding, we typically recommend a small, subtle implant size, as 1) a little bit of volume is all you need to bounce back to your youthful breast size and 2) implants that are too large and heavy may lead to complications as your weakened breast tissue is not strong enough to hold them up.
Implant placement is either above the muscle, just behind the breast tissue (subglandular), or below the pectoral muscle (submuscular).
Submuscular placement leaves a natural look and feel with minimal scar tissue and makes breast tissue easily visible during any necessary scanning. This surgery takes longer and requires a lengthier recovery period.
Subglandular placement allows for fast surgery and faster healing but leaves more possibility of scar tissue forming, appears less natural, and doesn’t support implants as much as submuscular placement. The decision on implant placement is entirely up to the individual and should be discussed thoroughly with your surgeon.
What Other Procedures Can You Combine With Breast Augmentation During Mommy Makeover?
While breast lift with augmentation is one of the most popular procedures women choose to have during their mommy makeover surgery, other popular mommy makeover procedures include:
- Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
- Liposuction
- Breast reduction
- Arm lift
- Thigh lift
- Brazilian butt lift
- Fat transfer (usually for BBL)
When breast augmentation and Brazilian butt lift (BBL) are part of a mommy makeover, it creates excellent dramatic results as it highlights the breast-to-midsection ratio, and the waist-to-hip ratio, resulting in a beautiful hourglass shape.
How To Prepare For A Mommy Makeover With Breast Implants
If you have decided to get breast implants during your mommy makeover surgery, preparation for your surgery day and the following recovery is essential. Here are our tips for preparing for a mommy makeover with breast augmentation:
- Make sure you have plenty of button-up shirts, zip-up jackets, robes, and other comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to ensure you don’t apply any friction to your incisions.
- Buy any supportive bras and compression garments your surgeon recommends to help you heal properly and achieve your dream results.
- Be at or within a few pounds of your ideal weight before your mommy makeover, as even with liposuction included, a mommy makeover is not a weight loss solution.
- Do not smoke.
- Avoid drinking alcohol within a few weeks before and after your surgery.
- Stop taking blood thinners such as aspirin for two weeks before and after your mommy makeover.
- Be prepared to take off two weeks, or possibly more, from work to allow your body to heal.
- Be prepared to take several weeks off from strenuous activities such as cardio and weight lifting.
- Mayo Clinic mentions it’s important to understand that breast implants are not guaranteed to last forever and may require revision surgery in the future.
