What Is Otoplasty / Ear Surgery?

Ear surgery, technically known as otoplasty, can reshape, set back prominent ears, or reduce the size of large ears. When normal in size, the ears rarely attract attention. If protruding or prominent ears bother you, consider ear surgery.

Ear surgery requires an individualized approach; it can offer dramatic improvement and bring balance to the face. Repositioning protruding ears is the most common form of ear surgery and when a qualified, experienced surgeon performs the procedure, complications are rare and usually minor. There are many potential benefits of undergoing the procedure which is why previous patients have given the procedure a 95% worth-it rating on RealSelf.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Otoplasty?

Good candidates for ear surgery are adults and teenagers who:

  • Have realistic expectations regarding the ear surgery procedure
  • Are in good health and do not have any active diseases or serious, pre-existing medical conditions
  • Have protruding or prominent ears
  • Feel their ears are too big in relation to their facial features

Preparing For The Procedure

Before the Consultation

You should research the procedure prior to your consultation so you are clear on your aims for the surgery. We also recommend our Dallas Otoplasty patients to bring in photos of their ideal look and to write a list containing any questions or concerns they would like to discuss during the consultation.

Consultation

During the consultation, Dr. Liland will assess physical and emotional health, discuss expectations regarding the ear surgery, and examine the face structure and the ears. You will be able to discuss the ear surgery, the incisions, and the risks involved with the procedure. Dr. Liland will also show you several pre and post op pictures of the ear surgery.

Before the Procedure

Before the procedure, you should not take any medications containing aspirin or Vitamin E. It is also important that our Dallas Rhinoplasty patients stop smoking at least six weeks before their surgery to reduce the risks of any complications occuring as a result of the procedure.

How Is Otoplasty Performed?

The stages of Otoplasty consist of:

Anesthesia

General anesthesia is used to perform ear surgery. A Board Certified Anesthesiologist administers the anesthesia.

Incisions

An incision is made in the back of the ear so cartilage can be reduced or folded. Stitches are used to close the incision and to permanently position the ear closer to the head.

Closing the Incision

Dr. Liland closes the incisions with gentle techniques to minimize scarring.

More Information

Recovery From Otoplasty

You must arrange for an adult to drive you to and from your surgery. You cannot take a taxi home. You must also arrange for an adult to stay with you for 24 hours after the procedure.

You may find that a headband has been placed around the face to support the new position of the ear(s) during the initial healing process. It is very important that the bandages remain intact and are not disturbed. We recommend that our Dallas Ear Surgery patients wear a headband when sleeping for the first three weeks after their procedure and keep their head elevated on several pillows to minimize swelling.

Discomfort is usually minimal but any pain felt can be controlled with pain medication. Within one week, the dressing and stitches will be removed. Healing will continue for several weeks and scars will start to fade. Avoid heavy lifting, straining, or bending over for two weeks.
