What Is A Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is a combination of body contouring surgeries performed on women whose figures have changed after pregnancy and breastfeeding. The hormonal and weight changes that accompany pregnancy can lead to long-term alterations in a woman’s figure, particularly to the abdomen and breasts. These changes can result in a huge loss of confidence, so many women wish to restore their pre-pregnancy bodies through plastic surgery.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery, in the United States in 2020, breast augmentation, liposuction, and tummy tucks were all among the top five most commonly performed procedures. A mommy makeover will involve at least one, if not all three of these procedures. It has a 96% “worth it” rating on RealSelf.

What Are The Benefits Of A Mommy Makeover?

The specific benefits of a mommy makeover will depend on the patient’s reasons for undergoing surgery and the procedures they have done but the general benefits include:

  • Treats a range of concerns and areas in one session
  • Patients have one recovery period and time off work
  • Restores pre-pregnancy figure to boost confidence
  • Removes any pregnancy stretch marks on the abdomen
  • Permanent results

Who Is An Ideal Candidate For A Mommy Makeover?

Suitable candidates for a mommy makeover are women who have had children or breastfed. Other factors which will likely make someone an ideal candidate include:

  • They are in good physical health
  • They do not smoke
  • They have a healthy, sustainable diet and exercise regime
  • They have finished having children
  • They finished breastfeeding their last child at least six months ago
  • They are close to their ideal body weight

What Procedures Are Typically Involved In A Mommy Makeover?

Mommy makeovers tend to combine multiple procedures typically on the breasts, abdomen, and liposuction of the thighs, hips, love handles, or back.

Breast Surgery

The breasts are a fundamental area addressed during a mommy makeover. The chosen breast procedure our Dallas mommy makeover patients choose to undergo depends on their personal goals and how pregnancy impacted their figure. The potential breast procedures include:

  • Breast Implants: Silicone or saline breast implants can be inserted to restore size and volume after pregnancy. Breast Lift- reshapes, lifts, and tightens the breast to address worries of excess skin and sagging.
  • Breast Lift: A lift reshapes and tightens the breasts to address worries of excess skin and sagging.
  • Breast Reduction: A reduction removes excess breast tissue, including skin and fat, to decrease the size of the breasts.
  • Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation: A fat transfer provides a natural-looking enhancement for women who lost volume following pregnancy and breastfeeding, by transferring fat from other parts of the body and into the breasts.

Tummy Tuck

During pregnancy, the abdomen expands, frequently creating excess skin and stretching the abdominal muscles. With a tummy tuck, these muscles can be tightened and any excess skin can be removed to produce a flatter abdomen and reduce stretch marks. Liposuction of the abdomen can take place simultaneously to remove unwanted post-pregnancy fat.

A full tummy tuck can be performed where the entire abdomen is treated, or a mini version can be undertaken to address the area of the abdomen below the belly button. Liposuction

Although suitable candidates for a mommy makeover should be close to their ideal weight, liposuction can help by removing unwanted and excess fat deposits from areas of concern to the patient.

Liposuction can be performed on various body areas but is most commonly performed on the hips, love handles, or thighs. In some mommy makeovers, patients choose to have the removed fat grafted elsewhere, including to the breasts (Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation) or the buttocks (Brazilian Butt Lift).

How To Prepare For A Mommy Makeover

Before the Consultation

You should research the procedure before your consultation. It is also advisable to bring photos of your ideal figure to the consultation so that Dr. Liland can clarify your aims. Any questions or concerns will be addressed during the consultation, and you will receive more information on the different procedures, risks, and recovery.

Consultation

Many patients know what procedures they desire, while others are unsure what would be most suitable for their needs and goals. This is why Dr. Liland will assess a patient’s body to evaluate the best procedures to achieve each woman’s specific goals. He will discuss your medical history and current medications and take any necessary photos.

Before the Procedure

It is important that anyone wishing to undertake a mommy makeover in Dallas stops smoking six weeks before the procedure and stops taking any medications that Dr. Liland recommends.

How Is The Mommy Makeover Surgery Performed?

Anesthesia

A mommy makeover is performed under general anesthesia, which is administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. In some cases, local anesthetic and sedation can be used, but this depends on the exact procedures being performed.

Incision

An incision is made to the targeted area. The type and size of the incision will depend on the procedure.  For liposuction, a small incision is made where the cannula will be inserted. For a tummy tuck or breast surgery, a larger incision line is made, which will leave a scar.

Procedure

Through the incision hole the specific procedure will then be performed. This could involve inserting a cannula to vacuum out fat deposits, inserting breast implants, or removing excess skin from the breasts or abdomen.

Closing the Incisions

The incisions will be closed, most likely with dissolvable stitches, and will be dressed in the necessary way for recovery. If permanent stitches are used to close any incisions, they will be removed around a week after the procedure.

Steps 2-4 will then be repeated for the next procedures as only one procedure will be performed at a time. The order in which your procedures will be conducted will vary depending on what you are having done. Generally, any procedures of the back, such as back or love handle liposuction, will be conducted first and then the breast procedures tend to be performed, before finally working on the abdomen.

In this section, we’ve included an example of a previous patient. To see more, please check out our gallery, or ask Dr Liland for before and after photos in your mommy makeover consultation.

In this example, our patient was a 35-44-year-old woman, who underwent a mommy makeover procedure that included breast implant revision, with her 450cc saline implants replaced with 700cc silicone implants, and a tummy tuck.

You can see how much this rejuvenated the body and combated problem areas to achieve the patient’s aesthetic goals. The breasts have been boosted with larger implants that still balance and complement the body’s natural curve, while the abdomen has been flattened and tightened to create a more youthful appearance.

More Information

Should I wait until I’m done having children?

Becoming a mother is one of the biggest blessings, but carrying a child and breastfeeding babies can change a woman’s body significantly. Although getting a mommy makeover before you are finished having children is viable, the better option is to wait until you have finished.

This is because childbearing after undergoing mommy makeover surgery can harm, and even wipe out, the results.

There are instances in which a mommy makeover is necessary before childbearing, for example, when women lose significant amounts of weight. But, in most cases, it’s usually best to wait until after you have children. If you are considering a mommy makeover surgery but plan to have children in the future, you should discuss the risks with Dr. Liland.

Will I scar?

The mommy makeover involves multiple procedures in one rejuvenation process. It typically involves a breast lift or augmentation, abdominoplasty, and liposuction. However, all procedures are elective, and some women decide to have just one or two to get their dream post-pregnancy body. As with any major aesthetic surgery, procedures included in a mommy makeover will leave visual scars on your breasts, tummy, and other areas of your body.

So, what level of scarring can you expect? Here is how the scarring appears after the different mommy makeover procedures:

  • Breast lift scars are usually easy to hide with clothing and fade over time.
  • Breast augmentation scars differ depending on the technique used, which is also true for breast reduction. With periareolar incisions, the incisions are made around the lower half of the areola and can be hidden under a bikini. Trans-axillary incisions are made in the armpit, resulting in no scars on the breasts. These scars typically fade within 18 months.
  • Tummy tucks leave the most visible scars and are usually either U or V-shaped.
  • Liposuction leaves the smallest scars out of all the mommy makeover procedures as only small incisions are made during surgery.

How soon after birth can I have a mommy makeover?

There is a long-standing myth that women can have a mommy makeover right after giving birth and bounce back to their pre-pregnancy bodies. This is completely untrue and unsafe.

New mothers should wait at least six months after childbirth before receiving cosmetic surgery. This is especially important if you are considering adding a tummy tuck as part of your procedure, because this time frame provides you with enough downtime for your abdominal tissue to heal.

Everyone’s body functions differently, though, and for some women, it may take up to a year after childbirth until their body has healed enough to undergo cosmetic surgery.

Recovery from a mommy makeover

You must arrange for an adult to drive you home and stay with you for the first day after your mommy makeover. Your recovery instructions will then be tailored to you, based on the procedures performed, which Dr. Liland will explain in the consultation before your surgery.

It is important to follow all recovery and aftercare instructions such as wearing any necessary compression garments, cleaning incisions properly, avoiding strenuous exercise, eating well, drinking plenty of fluids, and avoiding smoking for a further 6 weeks.

You should take around 2-4 weeks of recovery time. In most cases, it takes up to 3 months before our mommy makeover patients fully recover from the procedure and up to 6 months until all the swelling has subsided. How much does a mummy makeover cost in Dallas?

Due to the extensive range of surgeries that can be undertaken in a mommy makeover, it can be hard to estimate the cost accurately. Usually, a mommy makeover includes a tummy tuck and a type of breast surgery. According to RealSelf, the average cost of a tummy tuck ranges from $3,175 to over $13,3000, while the cost of breast surgery will depend on the type (augmentation, lift, or reduction).

Overall, the American Society of Plastic Surgery states that a mommy makeover typically costs between $10,000 to $20,000. For more information on the cost of a mommy makeover procedure, you can view our blog ‘Mommy Makeover Cost In Dallas‘.
