What is Breast Lift Surgery?

A breast lift elevates and reshapes sagging breasts by removing excess skin and tightening surrounding tissue. This procedure helps create a youthful contour and can reposition the nipples as needed. The procedure is not designed to change the size of the breasts but simply to lift and reshape them and has a 93% worth it rating on RealSelf.

Most women that desire to undergo breast lift surgery have experienced significant sagging or stretching in their breasts. This tends to be the result of pregnancy, breastfeeding, significant weight loss, heredity reasons, or can occur naturally over time as we age and because of gravity.

Other women have concerns regarding the position of their nipples as they feel they are extremely low down on their breasts or point downwards. Another reason some patients wish to undergo a breast lift procedure is due to the fact their breasts have sagged asymmetrically and a breast lift can even out the height and position of the breasts.

Am I a Suitable Candidate for a Breast Lift?

Good candidates for a breast lift in Dallas will be those who are insecure over their breast positioning or have any of the concerns stated above. In addition, the American Society of Plastic Surgery state that suitable candidates tend to be those who:

  • Are physically healthy
  • Do not smoke
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Are a stable weight

You will not be a good candidate if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What are the Different Types of Breast Lift?

There are different types of breast lift procedures and Dr. Liland will help recommend the most suitable for your specific needs. The various types of breast lift procedures include:

Crescent Lift – A crescent lift is performed when there is minimal sagging of the breasts. This procedure results in very minimal scarring and is often performed alongside breast augmentation surgery.

Donut Lift – A donut lift is similar to a crescent lift as it is performed when there is minimal sagging and tends to be done alongside augmentation. The difference is it can also reduce the size of the areola.

Vertical/ Lollipop Lift – A vertical, or lollipop, lift reshapes the entire breast and removes any excess skin so is ideal for patients who have significant sagging. The incisions made for this procedure are more extensive as they are in the shape of a lollipop. A circular incision is made around the areola and a straight line directly downwards to the bottom of each breast is made.

Anchor Lift – An anchor lift is performed when there is a large extent of sagging and excess skin, so results in more significant scarring as the incision lines are in the shape of an anchor.  A circular incision is made around the areola followed by a straight line down the breast, then a horizontal line at the bottom of each breast. This type of breast lift is often performed alongside a breast reduction.

What Procedures can be Combined with a Breast Lift?

Whichever procedure this surgery is combined with will likely impact the type of breast lift procedure that is recommended. The procedures that our Dallas breast lift patients tend to combine with their procedure include a variety of other breast procedures such as:

Breast Implants A breast lift does not increase the size of the breasts, it simply lifts and reshapes the breast tissue. If you have concerns regarding both lifting and enhancing your breasts, then a combination of a breast lift and breast implants can be used to achieve the best results.

Breast Reduction For some women, their breasts have sagged due to the extensive amount of weight from their breasts. Having a Breast Reduction Procedure alongside a breast lift will reduce the size of the breasts and lift them so they are smaller, less heavy, and their position is raised.

Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation – This procedure can be performed alongside a breast lift to add volume to the breasts as well as lift them. The fat is taken through liposuction from chosen areas of the body and then inserted into the breasts to enhance their size.

Mommy Makeover – A breast lift is often performed as part of a Mommy Makeover Procedure, which typically includes undergoing one of our Breast Surgeries, a Tummy Tuck and Liposuction.

Preparing for a Breast Lift

Before the Consultation

It is recommended that you research the procedure and are clear on your goals and your ideal figure. We recommend that our Breast Lift patients in Dallas bring in photos of the type of results they are looking for to their consultation and make a note of any questions so they can be answered during the consultation.

Consultation

Your medical history, current medications, allergies, and the goals of your surgery will be discussed with Dr. Liland. He will then assess and measure your breasts and nipple position so he can recommend which procedure will be most suitable for your requirements. You may also need to undertake a mammogram of your breasts.

Before the Procedure

It is recommended that you stop smoking at least six weeks before you undergo your surgery to reduce the risk of any complications occurring as a result of the procedure. It is additionally recommended that you lose any excess weight before the surgery.

How is a Breast Lift Performed?

The procedure will vary depending on your breast shape, size, degree of sagging as well as the size and position of the areolas. The typical stages of the procedure are:

Anesthesia

General or local anesthetic will be administered by a Board Certified Anesthesiologist. If you’re interested in learning more about anesthesia please visit our page on Sedation Options.

Incisions

The incision areas will depend on the specific type of breast lift procedure being performed. Generally, there will be incision lines made around the areola and potentially also down and across the breasts.

Reshaping

The breast tissue will be lifted, reshaped and any excess skin will be removed. The procedure may also include repositioning and in some cases reducing the size of the nipples or areola.

Closing the Incisions

Stitches are used to close the skin back together. The procedure will result in some scarring, the extent of which will depend on the type of procedure performed.

A breast lift procedure helps lift, tighten and restore the breasts for patients who have concerns over sagging or excess skin.

On the right, you’ll find a before and after picture of a patient between the age of 35-44 years old who underwent a breast lift procedure as they desired more youthful and lifted breasts.

More Information

Can I breastfeed after a breast lift?

Breast lift surgery does not usually affect the milk supply of the breasts. In most cases, surgeons such as Dr. Liland find that patients can breastfeed after a breast lift issue-free if they were able to breastfeed before the surgery. Any surgery comes with its risks, but the chances of a breast lift affecting a patient’s ability to breastfeed depend on the techniques used to perform the procedure. If the breast lift is performed along with another breast surgery, such as an augmentation, the chances of it affecting the patient’s ability to breastfeed are greater. If you notice a decrease in milk production following breast lift surgery, contact your surgeon and ensure that you supplement with formula in order to give your baby all the vital nutrients.

What’s the difference between a breast lift and breast augmentation?

Breast augmentations and breast lifts are both popular cosmetic procedures in the Dallas area for women looking to improve the size or shape of their breasts. When researching which type of breast surgery is right for you, it’s important to know the difference between them. Augmentation results in an increase in the cup size of your breasts, while a lift simply elevates sagging tissue in the breasts. Dr. Liland often receives inquiries from women interested in enhancing the overall appearance of their breasts. If you are looking to improve the whole package of your breasts, including the shape and size, you may be a good candidate for receiving a combination of augmentation and a lift.

How long do the results last?

If you’re considering undergoing a breast lift, it’s normal to wonder how long the results will last. Patients are typically able to live confidently in their results for approximately 10 to 15 years. As women’s bodies all function differently, it’s important to note that this time frame can vary depending on a number of factors. Some women go even longer than 15 years before a revision is necessary. If you want to extend the results of your surgery, here are some techniques you can try:

  • Maintain the weight range you were upon receiving the procedure
  • Avoid having the procedure until after childbearing and breastfeeding
  • Wear supportive bras
  • Avoid smoking

What is the cost of a breast lift in Dallas?

The cost will depend on the type of breast lift procedure performed. If a breast reduction or augmentation procedure is also performed, the price will be significantly increased. The procedure is a cosmetic surgery and performed for aesthetic purposes meaning that it is extremely unlikely that your insurance provider will cover the costs of the surgery. For more information regarding your insurance coverage and policies, you should contact your healthcare provider.

Recovery from the procedure

After the procedure, you will have bandages around your breasts and might have surgical drains in place to help with the excess fluid. You will need to wear a compression garment or surgical bra for the first few weeks after the procedure to help with swelling. We also recommend that our Dallas Breast Lift patients wear a sports bra for additional comfort and support.

Additionally, you should give your body time to rest and recover from the surgery and will have follow-up appointments for any drains or stitches that need to be removed. Patients tend to be back to normal activities after 6 weeks and so should avoid exercise immediately after their surgery and sleep on their back or side until they have recovered.

The results may take a few months to be visible due to the initial swelling. The scars will initially be very visible but will begin to fade with time. Dr. Liland will talk you through the aftercare process of cleaning the incisions and changing your bandages as well discuss any concerns over scarring or recovery.
