What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that removes unwanted fat deposits from various areas of the body where fat has been difficult to lose through diet and exercise. The procedure creates immediate results since the unwanted fat deposits are permanently removed from the body. The main areas that tend to be treated can be divided into facial liposuction, upper-body liposuction, and lower-body liposuction with the most common areas being the waist, thighs, love handles, back, and arms.
Liposuction has become one of the most common surgical procedures over the past two decades and was reported to be the fourth most common procedure in 2020. To find out how much liposuction tends to cost and how you can finance the procedure you can read our blog ‘How Much Is Liposuction In Dallas, Texas?‘ Be aware that it typically is not covered by insurance as it is an elective cosmetic procedure.
Why Do Patients Consider Liposuction?
Even though the number of non-surgical fat removal procedures have been increasing, the American Society of Plastic Surgery explains that these tend to remove a much lower percentage of fat. Surgical liposuction has an 87% worth-it rating on RealSelf and can treat a wider range of areas and contour or shape an area with greater accuracy. The specific reasons for undergoing liposuction do vary since the procedure can be performed on most areas of the body but the typical benefits of liposuction include:
- Achieving a more toned figure
- Achieving your desired physique
- Lose fat from areas unresponsive to exercise or diet
- Immediate results (other than initial swelling)
- Permanent results
- A reduction in pain and mobility issues for lymphedema patients
Additionally, liposuction can be combined with other procedures such as excess skin removal, or fat grafting, where the fat removed through liposuction is used to enhance other areas of the body such as the buttock (BBL) or breasts (Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation).
Who Is An Ideal Candidate For Liposuction?
Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure since it is designed to remove resistant fat deposits so patients should be close to their ideal weight and have realistic expectations of the procedure. Health and lifestyle factors that might make you a good candidate for liposuction include:
- Having good skin elasticity
- Being in good physical health
- Do not have circulatory/ blood flow problems
- Do not have a weakened immune system
- Have good muscle tone but have fat deposits that you cannot easily lose
- Are not overweight
- Being within 30% of your ideal body weight
- Close to a healthy BMI (having a high BMI increases the chance of risks)
- Are a stable weight
Liposuction Before Pregnancy
Women tend to have liposuction post-pregnancy to remove any excess fat they may be struggling to lose after giving birth. However, many women have liposuction before pregnancy and it is more likely to be effective as your skin’s quality is at its best and will likely adjust well from the procedure. Liposuction pre-pregnancy can also help to reduce the amount of fat that accumulates on that area during pregnancy and after giving birth.
What Areas Can be Treated with Liposuction?
According to Healthline, the most common areas for liposuction are the abdomen, back, ‘love handles’, thighs, and arms. However, liposuction can be performed on any area of the body that the patient wishes to have fat deposits removed from.
Abdomen Liposuction Dallas
Abdomen liposuction is a highly sought-after treatment as many people feel insecure about the excess weight around their stomach that is difficult to lose naturally. The procedure tends to create a flatter and more contoured or muscle-looking midsection. Healthline explains that ideal candidates are those who solely wish to have fat deposits removed. Other procedures, such as a Tummy Tuck Procedure, are more suitable for those with concerns over excessive skin.
Arm Liposuction Dallas
Those considering arm liposuction tend to complain of having large or sagging arms, often referred to as ‘bingo wings’. Arm liposuction can permanently reduce a patient’s arm size and create a more defined look, as long as a healthy weight is maintained. However, patients who have concerns over excess skin tend to be less suitable for this procedure and may benefit more from an arm lift.
Back Liposuction Dallas
Many men and women complain of excess fat accumulating across their back, which seems unresponsive to diet or exercise. For women, this can create concerns of having ‘backrolls’ or ‘bra strap fat’. The back is considered one of the best areas for liposuction and can result in a slimmer physique, meaning clothing can often fit better and confidence is enhanced.
The back can be divided into several areas for liposuction including areas of the upper back such as the ‘buffalo hump’ (behind the shoulder), the posterior axillary (the area around the bra strap), and areas of the lower back including the waist, ‘love handles’ and the lumbo-sacral fat pad.
Chin Liposuction Dallas
Unwanted fat under the chin is a common complaint, even from those who are naturally slim or who have worked hard to lose weight since some fat deposits under the chin can resist diet and exercise. Chin liposuction reduces the patient’s chin size, so can transform their chin, jaw, or jawline.
Neck Liposuction Dallas
Neck Liposuction is one of the most popular liposuction procedures as it results in a more sculpted, youthful, and contoured neck or jawline. People between the ages of 20 and 50 are the most suitable candidates as the procedure removes fat and does not impact skin quality. The procedure takes around 30 minutes and can be performed alongside other facial procedures, such as a facelift.
Knee Liposuction Dallas
Excess fat around the knees, as a result of either genetics or weight gain, can create concerns regarding our leg’s appearance. Knee liposuction helps to enhance the appearance of the patient’s knees and legs by making them look slimmer and more contoured.
Thigh Liposuction Dallas
McIndoe reports an 82% increase in thigh surgeries from 2000 to 2017 as many women are dissatisfied with their thighs’ appearance or size. Some women have concerns over the pain and rashes which result from their thighs rubbing together. Thigh liposuction helps to reduce these health concerns as well as make the patient’s legs look slimmer, which indirectly makes the buttock look rounder and slimmer. This procedure is often performed alongside other liposuction procedures, and the fat removed can be grafted into other areas. Additionally, thigh liposuction is often performed alongside a Thigh Lift Procedure for weight loss patients who wish to have excess fat removed but also any excess skin that has accumulated across their thighs.
Preparing For Liposuction
Before the Consultation
You should undertake research on the procedure and prepare a list of any questions or worries you have. You should also bring in photos of your desired look so that Dr. Liland can fully understand your goals and discuss them with you.
Consultation
The consultation itself will involve a discussion of your medical history, current medications and allergies. Dr. Liland will examine the area you wish to have treated and take any necessary photos. He will then explain any risks, discuss aftercare instructions and answer any questions or concerns.
Before the Procedure
It is recommended that our Dallas Liposuction patients stop smoking and drinking alcohol before their surgery to help reduce the risks of complications.
How Is Liposuction Performed?
Dr. Liland performs two main types of liposuction for his Dallas liposuction patients including traditional liposuction and tumescent liposuction. Dr. Liland can provide information on both techniques in your consultation and give specific advice on which would be most suitable for you.
Traditional Liposuction:
This is an outpatient procedure that consists of the following four steps:
Anesthesia
Local anesthesia and sedation will be administered to ensure that you are comfortable throughout. A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist will then administer general anesthesia so you remain asleep.
Incision
Dr. Liland will create a tiny incision near the desired area. Wherever possible, incisions are hidden within the natural folds or contour lines of the skin.
Liposuction
Dr. Liland will insert a small cannula through the incision and the tip is used to loosen the underlying fat and vacuum this fat from the tissue.
Closing the Incisions
Once your treatment is complete Dr. Liland will close the incisions with stitches, using gentle techniques to minimize scarring.
Tumescent Liposuction:
With tumescent liposuction, Dr. Liland uses a special mixture of anesthesia to constrict blood vessels and cause the fat deposits to swell. This method allows him to eliminate fat more easily, meaning there is less trauma and a smoother recovery period.

More Information
How Much Fat Can Liposuction Remove?
Liposuction is not a tool for weight loss, so does not tend to remove large quantities of fat from the body. Liposuction instead removes excess fat deposits to enhance the patient’s appearance. Dr. Liland will assess your specific needs and discuss a plan for how much fat is suitable to have removed.
It is generally thought that 6-8 pounds of fat can be safely removed in one liposuction session. If more than that is requested, more sessions would be needed with time for recovery in between the sessions.
Recovery From Liposuction Dallas
You will need an adult to drive you home and stay with you for the first couple of days after your procedure. Dr. Liland explains that you will likely feel tired and sore for a few days and should expect some tenderness, bruising, numbness, and swelling. These are normal side effects that are part of the healing process, but within one or two days, you should be able to get up and move around. The recovery time for liposuction depends on the number of areas treated, the specific areas of the face or body that were treated, and the quantity of fat that was removed.
Liposuction Swelling Timeline
Within the first few weeks after your procedure, the swelling will begin to go down. However, it can take three or four months for the swelling to reduce fully and your final result to be visible.
Swelling can be reduced by wearing your compression garments and having lymphatic drainage massages to help with fluid accumulation. For more information on recovering from liposuction and about compression garments, you can view our ’12 FAQs About Liposuction Aftercare’ blog.
Dr. Liland will discuss the specific recovery process and timings with you in your consultation.
