What is revision rhinoplasty?
Revision rhinoplasty is a second procedure on the nose to correct or augment the results of an initial rhinoplasty. Patients typically choose a revision if they are unhappy with the results of the first surgery.
Revision rhinoplasties can impact both the appearance and function of the nose. In terms of aesthetics, we can change the shape of the bones and cartilage surrounding the nose, which can transform its outer appearance. Some patients also choose a revision to improve facial balance or adjust the angle of the nose. For instance, we may use revision rhinoplasty to lift the front of the nose upwards in the case of a hooked nose or turn it downwards for upturned nostrils.
Revision rhinoplasties can accentuate or enhance the results of a prior operation. They can also complete a previous operation if the surgery was performed incorrectly.
The procedure can also alter the bridge of the nose. Surgeons may remove tissue from this area to reduce the appearance of a “Roman nose” and make it look straighter in profile. In rarer cases, surgeons may also add small implants to add tissue that didn’t previously exist.
Lastly, revision rhinoplasty can apply internally. Surgeons, for instance, can correct a deviated septum, a structure in the nose that sits between the nostrils, responsible for channelling air into the lungs. Revision rhinoplasties can augment deficient cartilage or reduce it if it impedes breathing.
Who is a good candidate for revision rhinoplasty?
Generally, good candidates for ethnic rhinoplasty:
- Are unhappy with the results of their original rhinoplasty
- Wish to alter the appearance of their nose further
- Suffer breathing difficulties following their original rhinoplasty
- Had their first rhinoplasty more than six months ago
- Have realistic expectations
- Are above the age of 18 and don’t smoke
What’s involved in a revision rhinoplasty?
Revision rhinoplasties can take various forms. Generally speaking, though, we’ll either remove or add tissue, based on your goals.
For instance, revision rhinoplasties often remove the scar tissue of previous operations. Leftover scar tissue may be impacting the final results of their previous surgery. We may also remove additional tissue that the first surgeon didn’t remove in the primary operation.
In other cases, revision rhinoplasties can involve adding tissues, particularly to the nasal tip. To do this, we can harvest compatible soft tissues from other parts of the body, usually from the bridge of the nose or, if that is unavailable, from the temporalis fascia, a part of the skull. All surgeons will use their best judgment when choosing a harvest site to minimize visual impact.
Regardless, the plan for your revision rhinoplasty will be discussed and explained well before the surgery (usually as part of the initial consultation), so you’re comfortable and happy with the procedure.
How long does it take to recover, and what results can I expect in the months after surgery?
Recovery time for revision rhinoplasty is around one to two weeks, in line with the primary rhinoplasty. As you’ll remember from your initial surgery, the face will swell and bruise, but this gradually calms over 3-4 weeks.
You’ll usually wear a splint for the first week after the surgery. Then, you’ll return for a follow-up appointment where we’ll remove the splint. Other than for the splint removal, we recommend you stay at home for 7-10 days following surgery to rest and recover.
The results from revision rhinoplasty are long-lasting as surgery will change the shape of your nose permanently.
With that said, the appearance of the nose will evolve after the operation. Patients may notice subtle changes in size and shape as the swelling recedes and surrounding tissues settle into their long-term patterns.
FAQs
How long should I wait for a revision rhinoplasty?
If you are dissatisfied with the results of your first rhinoplasty, or you want to make a change, you often want to undergo revision rhinoplasty immediately. However, doing so is risky. Surgeons should only conduct a corrective operation once the swelling from the primary rhinoplasty subsides. And this process can take between six months and a year.
Therefore, if you had your first rhinoplasty more than 6-12 months, it is likely you can go ahead with revision surgery immediately. However, we will first examine your nose to determine whether it is safe for the operation to proceed.
What do I need to consider before revision rhinoplasty?
Before getting a revision rhinoplasty, you should consider whether your nose has settled into its final outcome. It can take time for swelling to subside. You may discover that the results are more favorable the longer you wait.
You should also carefully consider which plastic surgeon to use. If you did not like the results of the first surgery, it may be worth choosing a different surgeon for the second.
