What Is A Fat Transfer?
Every person has his or her own reasons for considering a fat transfer. Improving one’s self-image is usually one of the reasons. Fat transfer is a procedure that combines liposuction of the waist; abdomen, back or legs, with a fat transfer technique using the patient’s own natural living fat cells. The harvested fat can be re-injected to enhance:
- Breasts
- Buttocks (BBL)
- Calves
- Face
- Lips
Fat transfer to lips and face are considered minor procedures and the amount of fat harvested from the donor area is minimal. However, procedures that transfer fat to either the breasts or the buttocks tend to require more fat to be taken from liposuction as most patients desire these areas to be significantly enhanced. Regardless of the quantity of fat required for the graft, the fat transfer itself is generally referred to as a minimally invasive treatment since only injections are used to administer the fat to the desired area. Who Is An Ideal Candidate For A Fat Transfer?
If considering a fat transfer you will make a good candidate if you:
- Are in good physical health
- Have enough areas of excess fat deposits to be taken for the grafts
- No circulatory problems
You are not a good candidate for a fat transfer, if you:
- Are not 18 years old and emotionally mature to understand the fat transfer procedure
- Do not have realistic expectations about fat transfer
- Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have an infection anywhere in your body
Preparing For A Fat Transfer Procedure
Before the Consultation
Research of the procedure should be conducted before your consultation. You should also consider your particular goals and areas you would wish to have liposuction performed on. Bringing in photos of your ideal result and a list of any questions is also recommended so that Dr. Liland can be clear on your goals.
Consultation
During the consultation, Dr. Liland will assess physical and emotional health, discuss expectations regarding the fat transfer procedure, and examine the areas desired for the fat transfer procedure. You will be able to discuss the procedure, the incisions, and the risks involved with the fat transfer procedure.
Before the Procedure
It is necessary that all our Dallas Fat Transfer patients stop smoking at least six weeks before their procedure to reduce the risk of any complications occurring.
How Is A Fat Transfer Performed?
Anesthesia
Fat transfer is performed as an outpatient procedure (no overnight stay is required). Typically general anesthesia is administered by a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
Fat Transfer
Fat is removed from areas such as the abdomen, flanks, and/or legs using Liposuction. Once removed, the fat is processed to remove excess fluid and then transferred in its native form. Fat is injected through small incisions into the recipient area (lips, face, buttocks, or calves).
Closing the Incisions
Dr. Liland will close the incisions with gentle techniques to minimize scarring. The overall scarring from the procedure will be very minimal since only small liposuction incisions or fat injections are used.

Recovery From A Fat Transfer Procedure
You will probably feel tired and sore for several days after the fat transfer procedure. However, within one or two days our Dallas Fat Transfer patients tend to able to get up and around. The surgical area may remain swollen and sensitive for a few weeks.
The recovery period will be different for the areas which underwent liposuction compared to the area fat was grafted into. You will need to wear a compression garment on all treated areas for a couple of weeks after your surgery to help reduce swelling and excessive fluid build-up. The results of your procedure will not be fully visible for up to six months after the procedure due to the swelling. Fat Transfer Risks:
- Bleeding/ damage to blood vessels
- Liposuction poses a small risk of puncturing an internal organ depending on where it is performed
- Fat embolism (where a blood vessel is blocked by fat)
- Death of fat tissue
- Bleeding under the skin
General Surgery Risks:
- Infections
- An allergic reaction to the anesthetic
- Blood clots (can lead to DVT)
