What Is Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Breast augmentation (mammoplasty) is a surgical procedure to enhance breast size. Breast augmentation surgery is split into two methods: inserting implants or transferring fat to the breast. The type of breast enhancement procedure will depend on your specific needs and desires. Dr Liland specializes in breast procedures, so will be able to provide expert advice on which method will be most suitable for your needs.

A Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation uses liposuction to remove excess fat from other areas of the body, typically the stomach, thighs, or back and is transferred into the breasts. Liposuction can be performed on various areas of the body, but patients must be at least a size 10-12. The procedure is suitable for those who desire an increase in breast size but wish to avoid breast enhancement surgery or do not feel comfortable inserting a permanent substance, that is not from their body, into their breasts.

Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation Surgery has a 88% worth-it rating on RealSelf and the main benefit of this procedure is that it creates a permanent and more natural-looking result than breast implants.

Why Do Patients Consider A Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation?

Most women choose to get breast augmentation surgery as they are insecure with their current breast size and wish to enhance this aspect of their figure or make their breasts in better proportion with the rest of their figure. Other potential reasons for breast augmentation surgery may include:

  • It achieves a more natural-looking result than breast implants.
  • Some women wish to rebuild one or both of their breasts after suffering from various conditions.
  • To help solve concerns over asymmetry between the sizes of the breasts (more fat can be grafted into one breast to balance out breast size)
  • Some women dislike the idea of having a foreign substance (breast implants) inserted into their body. They feel more comfortable with a substance from their own body being inserted.
  • Having areas of excess fat deposits removed alongside the breast enhancement.
  • It provides permanent results.

Who Is An Ideal Candidate For A Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation?

Prospective patients who will be good candidates for this procedure tend to be those who wish to increase their breast size and are:

  • In good physical health
  • Do not smoke
  • Have realistic expectations, are in a healthy state of mind, and have spent time researching the procedure
  • Have enough excess fat on other areas of their body to be grafted into the breasts

You will not be a good candidate if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, in poor health, or are smaller than a size 10/12

Preparing For The Procedure

Before the Consultation

It is important to research the procedure and spend time thinking about your goals. It is recommended that you bring in photos to show Dr. Liland your ideal figure and write down any questions you wish to discuss at your consultation.

Consultation

Dr. Liland will assess the areas you wish to have Liposuction performed on as well as your breasts and discuss your goals for the surgery. Any necessary pictures will be taken and the procedure, potential risks, and recovery will all be explained to you. You will also discuss your medical history, current medications, and allergies.

Before the Procedure

We recommend that our Dallas Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation patients stop smoking and reduce or stop drinking alcohol before the procedure to help reduce the risk of complications occurring as a result of the surgery.

How Is A Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation Performed?

The stages of a fat transfer breast augmentation consist of:

Anesthesia

The procedure can be performed with either a local or general anesthetic and will be discussed with you by Dr. Liland.

If you’re interested in learning more about anesthesia please visit our page on Sedation Options.

Incision

A small incision is made into the area where the excess fat deposits are removed. A cannula is then inserted into the incision and is used to suction out the desired amount of fat. These incisions will generally be closed with dissolvable stitches. If permanent stitches are used you will need another appointment to have them removed after the procedure.

Fat Grafting

The fat removed from the body must be medically treated to ensure that the fat is separated from any blood or other fluids. This fat is then injected into the breasts in the quantity desired. The procedure does not require any incisions to be closed with stitches since only injections are used.

Achieves a natural-looking breast enhancement for a fuller, more symmetrical bust line without breast implants.

A 46-year-old patient who had a Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation underwent Liposuction of the abdomen, flanks, and arms with 360cc of fat transferred to the breasts.

More Information

Cost of a Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation

The cost of this procedure can significantly vary. The factors which impact the cost of fat transfer breast augmentation typically include:

  • The quantity of fat that is removed
  • The quantity of fat injected into the breasts
  • The number of areas that liposuction is performed on.
  • If additional procedures are performed

Health insurance does not generally cover the cost of this procedure as it is performed for aesthetic purposes. However, some patients can receive partial or full coverage for breast augmentation if their breasts were impacted by diseases such as breast cancer. Whether or not your health insurance will cover the procedure will need to be discussed with your particular provider.

Recovery from a Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation

There will be multiple areas that you will need to take care of and which will need time to heal:

Liposuction RecoveryThere will be a large amount of swelling in the liposuction sites, so compression garments will need to be worn to reduce swelling. It is recommended that our patients drink lots of fluids, walk frequently and potentially undergo lymphatic massages a few weeks after the procedure to help with fluid absorption. The results of the procedure will not be fully visible until the swelling has subsided and this can take up to three or four months. There are many aftercare tips that Dr. Liland will discuss with you but you can also read our ’12 FAQs About Liposuction Aftercare blog for more information.

Breast Fat Transfer Recovery – After the surgery, we recommend that our Dallas fat transfer breast augmentation patients wear a compression garment and then a sports bra for approximately six weeks after the procedure. Exercise should be avoided for the first few weeks and you should only perform activities you feel able to do as it is important to give your body time to heal and recover.

Dr. Liland will discuss and prescribe any pain medication that is recommended after the surgery. An adult must be with you for the first couple of days to ensure you are driven home after the surgery and have someone to help care for you.
