What Is A Facelift?

A Facelift, medically termed Rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic procedure performed to reduce the appearance of facial aging and rejuvenate the skin by lifting and tightening the lower regions of the face. The procedure has a 92% worth-it rating on RealSelf and was one of the top five most commonly performed procedures in the US in 2020.

As we get older our face begins to show the signs of aging as wrinkles and lines deepen and our skin becomes looser which can lead to excess skin formulating at the jawline, forming ‘jowls’ and sagging skin can occur on the neck. A facelift procedure removes the excess skin and helps to tighten both the muscle and skin on the face.

Who Is An Ideal Candidate For A Facelift?

Dr. Liland tends to only recommend undergoing a facelift procedure if you have significant concerns over signs of facial aging. For more minor signs of aging, dermal fillers or other non-surgical treatments are often sufficient. Other factors that could make you a suitable candidate include:

  • Being in good health
  • Having good skin elasticity
  • Do not smoke
  • Have deep lines or wrinkles
  • Have loose sagging skin

The Different Types Of Facelift Procedures

There are multiple types of facelift techniques that address various areas of the face and the different concerns of patients. Dr. Liland will perform an assessment of your face and discuss your goals with you so he can recommend the technique most suitable for your individual needs.

Mini-Facelift

Generally, slightly younger patients are most suitable for this technique as it targets the lower area of the face and addresses more moderate signs of aging. Fewer incisions are made and less skin is removed during this procedure meaning that it is cheaper and requires a shorter recovery time than a more extensive facelift procedure. However, this procedure will not suit everyone as it cannot address more extensive signs of aging.

Mid-Facelift

The cheeks and the middle region of the face are the main targeted areas and so this technique is suitable for anyone with concerns over sagging cheeks or creases. This procedure is cheaper than a full facelift and is very effective in tightening the skin around the cheeks and enhancing the cheekbones. For some of our Dallas facelift patients, fat may also be repositioned under the eyes to prevent them from looking ‘hollow’ or out of proportion to the cheeks.

Full Facelifts

There are two main types of full facelift procedures:

SMAS Facelift

This technique addresses a larger area as the lower 2/3 of the face are lifted. The technique focuses on lifting, tightening, and removing skin to address sagging, excess skin, and signs of aging across the face.

Deep Plane Facelift

This technique is performed on patients who have considerable concerns over aging on both the face and neck. The technique used focuses on the muscles and fat rather than on removing or tightening the skin.

Will A Facelift Address My Neck?

Many patients who desire a facelift procedure have concerns over facial aging that also extend to their neck. A facelift procedure only addresses the lower two-thirds of the patient’s face and does not resolve issues on their neck. In these cases, some patients choose to undergo both a facelift procedure and a Neck Lift procedure. If a patient’s concerns are solely with their neck having excess or sagging skin, unwanted fat deposits or fine lines and do not extend to their face, a Neck Lift Procedure can be performed by itself.

Non-Surgical Facelift Options

Non-surgical options, such as injectables and BOTOX, are available to reduce signs of aging but these are most suitable for patients with minimal concerns. Additionally, minimally invasive techniques such as radiofrequency treatments or lasers can be used to reduce signs of facial aging. However, any non-surgical option will have a less significant impact and will require top-up treatments as the effects are not permanent.

How Long Will My Facelift Results Last?

Surgical facelift procedures will last significantly longer than any type of non-surgical facelift treatment. Non-surgical treatments tend to last for a few months up to a year and so will need to be continually repeated if results are to be maintained. During a surgical facelift procedure excess skin is removed from areas of the face and the underlying facial muscle is tightened to achieve the result. This means that the patient will permanently have these signs of aging reduced. According to RealSelf, a facelift can help patients to achieve a more lifted and youthful facial appearance for ten or more years showing long-term results can be obtained by a surgical procedure.

Despite this, aging is a natural process for everyone and so even if a patient has undergone a facelift procedure this will not prevent the face from continuing to age and so future signs of aging can occur across the face. However, these signs of aging will be less drastic than if the patient had not undergone a facelift procedure.

Preparing For The Procedure

Before the Consultation

You should undergo your own research of the various facelift procedures to gain a better understanding of the surgery itself and what technique seems most likely to address your goals. Bringing in pictures of your ideal look is also recommended as well as a list of questions and concerns you have so these can be addressed by Dr. Liland.

Consultation

Dr. Liland will discuss your personal facelift goals with you as well as your specific needs and address any questions. He will then conduct an assessment of your face and recommend the best technique to suit your needs. Your medical history, current medications and suitability for the procedure will also be discussed.

Before the Procedure

It is important that our Dallas facelift patients stop smoking around six weeks before their procedure to reduce the risk of complications occurring from the surgery.

How is a Facelift Performed?

The specific facelift technique will determine the exact steps of the procedure. Some techniques focus on tightening and removing the excess skin, while others will focus on tightening the muscles or inserting fat into areas of the face. Dr. Liland will explain your specific procedure steps with you before your surgery but the general steps of a facelift procedure are:

Anesthesia

Before beginning your procedure, we will administer anesthesia and sedation to ensure you are comfortable and relaxed. If you’re interested in learning more about anesthesia please visit our page on Sedation Options.

Incisions

Dr. Liland will make discreet incisions in the hairline, around the ears, or at the lower edge of the scalp. The exact incision location will depend on the type of facelift procedure being performed.

Tightening

Using the incision areas, Dr. Liland will tighten the underlying muscles and remove excess skin. The procedure can take from 2-4 hours to be performed depending on the specific facelift technique.

Closing the Incisions

Dr. Liland will close the incisions with stitches using techniques to minimize scarring. Bandages will be placed across the face after the procedure to minimize swelling and bruising and some patients also receive drainage tubes.

A facelift procedure helps to restore the lower two-thirds of the face by removing any excess skin and fine lines.

More Information

Facelifts Combined With Other Procedures

Since even a full facelift addresses only the lower two-thirds of the face, patients who have concerns regarding their entire face may desire to undergo an additional surgery that addresses the upper third of the face. Frequently, our Dallas facelift patients combine a brow lift or blepharoplasty with their facelift procedure to reduce signs of aging from the brows or the eyes. For many patients, this creates a more natural result since all areas of the face will be addressed during the surgery.

Additionally, some patients undergo a facelift procedure to resolve concerns over asymmetrical signs of aging. Not all areas of the face or both sides of the face will age at the same rate which can leave patients with noticeable differences between the two sides of their face. Facial Symmetry Surgery refers to a facial surgery or multiple surgeries that are performed to address facial asymmetries and a facelift is often performed as one of these procedures.

Recovery From A Facelift

Immediately following your surgery an adult should drive you home and stay with you for the first couple of days. You will initially have bandages across your face and an appointment will be made with Dr. Liland to remove these dressings and any drains if they were used. Either new bandages will be fitted or you will be able to go home without any, depending on your individual recovery.

Swelling and bruising will occur after the procedure and are a normal part of the healing process. Using a cold compress on the face for 20 minutes can help with this for the first couple of days. It is important to follow all aftercare instructions provided by Dr. Liland and to keep your incisions clean to prevent infection.

It generally takes around 2-4 weeks to recover from a facelift procedure and most of our Dallas facelift patients take a few weeks off work to give themselves time to heal from the procedure. After a month you are likely to be able to return to normal activities but this will depend on the procedure undertaken and your individual circumstances.
