What Is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia is a condition that can affect males and cause them to develop larger breasts than other men. According to Healthline gynecomastia, affects a quarter of all men and can lead many to feel insecure and lack confidence. The condition does not pose any risk to men’s health, it merely causes aesthetic concerns that cause many men to desire surgery to reduce their chest size.

Gynecomastia surgery was reported to be one of the top five procedures undertaken by men in 2018 as 24,753 men had breast reduction surgery. The procedure has a 96% worth-it rating on RealSelf due to the increase in confidence the majority of men gain from the procedure.

Typical causes of gynecomastia include puberty, weight gain, hormonal imbalances such as low testosterone, steroid use, or can be a result of other medications. Most commonly, the condition is a result of genetic factors and so simply losing weight is not a solution.

The procedure typically involves a combination of both surgery, to remove any breast tissue, as well as liposuction to vacuum out unwanted fat deposits from the chest. This helps to contour the chest and the pecs can be sculpted into the desired or most suitable shape for your figure.

Who Is An Ideal Candidate For Gynecomastia Surgery?

Factors that might make someone a suitable candidate for gynecomastia surgery include:

  • Breast tissue/ fat that is unresponsive to diet or exercise
  • Being in good physical health
  • Are a stable weight
  • Do not smoke
  • Do not take steroids

How Is Gynecomastia Surgery Performed?

Anesthesia

General anesthesia is administered by a Board Certified Anesthesiologist. In some cases, local anesthesia and sedation are used. For more information on the various types of sedation available you can visit our Sedation Options page.

Incision

Some patients only require liposuction, while others will also need breast tissue to be surgically removed. Small incisions are made into the chest and a cannula is inserted to vacuum out the fat deposits from the breasts and contour the area. Incision lines for surgical tissue removal tend to be made at the junction of the areola and chest skin, in the armpit, or at the side of the chest. In some cases, the breast gland needs removing while for other patients just breast tissue is removed.

Procedure

The procedure tends to take one or two hours depending on how much breast tissue and fat each patient has. The incisions are closed with stitches but some patients also need surgical drains for a few days after the procedure to help with excess fluid buildup. Dr. Liland will discuss the need for any drains and can help give you an indication of the severity of scarring and where the incisions will be made.

Gynecomastia Surgery Cost In Dallas

According to RealSelf, the average cost of gynecomastia surgery is $5,600, but the price is said to range from $25 to $11,650. The reason the average price range for this procedure is so great is that in rare cases insurance providers will help fund the procedure. Gynecomastia surgery is considered a cosmetic procedure since it poses no medical risk and is only undertaken for aesthetic reasons. However, some patients can have medical side effects from gynecomastia such as rashes under their breasts. You would need to check with your specific insurance provider to see if you would qualify for any coverage due to medical symptoms from the condition.

Gynecomastia Recovery

The recovery period for most Dallas gynecomastia patients is relatively short compared to most other cosmetic procedures. Patients tend to take a few days off work to give their body time to heal after the surgery and should wear a compression vest to help reduce swelling.

After a couple of weeks, most patients can resume normal activity but chest exercises should not be performed for a month or potentially longer, after surgery. Additionally, self-massage tends to be recommended to help prevent the nipples from attaching to the muscle below them. Dr. Liland will provide you with all necessary aftercare instructions prior to your procedure.

This procedure addresses the concerns of male patients who wish to have their breast size reduced and achieve a more toned chest.

A 45-54-year-old male patient underwent a Male Breast Reduction procedure and had pectoral implants inserted. He is shown in the after picture two years after his surgery and following an exercise program.
